On 18 and 19 September 2026, the historic city centre of Deventer transforms into the beating heart of Dutch journalism. The Nederlands Journalistiek Festival (NLJF) brings together journalists from across the country — from investigative reporters and podcast makers to editors-in-chief and media researchers — for two days of conversation, exchange, and reflection on the future of the craft.
The festival takes place across multiple venues in Deventer's medieval inner city, all within easy walking distance of each other. Through panels, lectures, workshops, live journalism theatre, film screenings, and exhibitions, there is something for everyone working in or around the press.
On Saturday 19 September, the doors open wide to the general public — anyone curious about how journalism works, and how it can be done better, is welcome.
Admission is free, made possible by the support of funds, public bodies, and sponsors.
Language Most of the programme is in Dutch, but we are offering a growing number of English-language sessions. These are listed separately below.
Getting there Deventer is easily reachable by train from Amsterdam (approx. 1 hour), Utrecht (approx. 45 min), and other major Dutch cities. The city also has good connections from Germany via the Amsterdam–Berlin ICE route, and is straightforward to reach from Schiphol Airport. The festival venues are a short walk from Deventer train station.
Accessibility All festival venues are wheelchair accessible, with the exception of the Spiegelzaal and Wonderbar at the Burgerweeshuis.
Food & drink The festival hub is located on the first floor of MIMIK, where the festival café serves coffee, tea, beer, lunch, and more throughout both days. The venues are also surrounded by plenty of cafés, restaurants, and terraces in Deventer's city centre.
Programme — including English-language sessions — will be listed below.
